2022 Kia Carnival LX Trim

Since people often use the Carnival as a family veThe LX trim is the 2022 Kia Carnival’s basic configuration, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at the specs. The LX has stylish and handy features, like 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, power-sliding rear doors, sliding and removable second-row seats, proximity entry with a push-button start, and a great-sounding six-speaker stereo system. It’s also packed with infotainment features, which you can access via the 8-inch touch-screen interface. Smartphone connectivity is easily achievable through Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, or the seven available USB ports, two for the middle and rear seats and three for the front seats.

Since people often use the Carnival as a family vehicle, Kia has naturally included standard driver aids. Here are some of the most helpful features:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist. This system warns you of an imminent frontal collision and applies the brakes in certain situations to mitigate the potential impact.
  • Lane Keeping Assist and Lane Following Assist systems. The former may issue a visual and auditory alert when it senses the Carnival drifting out of its lane without an active turn signal. The latter takes corrective measures to steer the vehicle back into its original lane if it still doesn’t detect any input from the driver.
  • Driver Attention Warning. This system analyzes your energy levels and issues an alert if it senses that your fatigue levels may impair your driving.
  • Blind-Spot Avoidance Assist. This system issues a warning if another vehicle is in your Carnival’s blind spot while you’re changing lanes.
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist. This system can detect oncoming traffic while you’re going in reverse, and it can apply the breaks when necessary.
  • Safe Exit Assist. This system prevents rear passengers from opening your Carnival’s door if the system senses other vehicles approaching from behind.

The LX trim also has an optional package, called the LX Seat package. It includes elegant, simulated leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a second-row bench seat that increases the maximum seating from seven people to eight.

How can it fit 11 seats, and people inside?

After opening the rear sliding door, the left 2nd-row seat can be moved for easier access to the third and fourth rows. The seat can slide and tilt forward to give ample room for people of any size to climb in and out. The center of the second and third rows contain a center “assist seat”. The assist seat is one that can fold straight down, then be folded sideways up against the other seat. This creates a path in the center of the seats for someone to walk past into the rear seat rows. The assist seats can even fold flat and become a table in the middle for rear passengers.

All the seats can slide forward and back to make sure everyone has enough room for their differently-sized legs. The fourth row can be folded completely flat into the floor so that it disappears. The rear cargo space is completely unavailable when the fourth row seats are upright. The second row can fold back flat when the seats are properly arranged and headrests are detached. These ones don’t go into the floor, they simply transform into “rest mode” which seems to be for sleeping. Kia recommends avoiding driving while the rear seats are in rest mode. The third and fourth rows can be removed, and with the second row slid to the front, the cargo space is massive.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2022 Carnival is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 churning out a healthy 290 hp; an eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. All-wheel drive, unfortunately, is not on the menu, as the Carnival will be offered only as a front-wheel-drive model. The Pacifica has an optional plug-in-hybrid powertrain and the new-for-2021 Sienna comes only as a hybrid, but we don’t expect Kia to offer such a setup on the Carnival, at least not right away. Kia says the Carnival can tow up to 3500 pounds. During our initial test drive, we were impressed with the Carnival’s well-balanced ride and handling. It delivered a smooth ride when cruising and felt composed in corners. The refined V-6 engine provides sprightly acceleration and powered the Carnival to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds at our test track.
