You can also get free cable premium channels by signing up to sites that allow free streaming of videos. Such websites include series cravings, TV box, and TV.com. Some of the networks, including Fox, Lifetime, CBS, NBC, and ABC, allow their users to be able to watch some of their shows for free online.
My Favorite Indoor TV Antenna
A rooftop outdoor antenna will get you the most channels. For those of you who are not able to install a rooftop antenna, I’ve done extensive testing of indoor antennas to come up with the one which brings in the most channels. Read more about the indoor TV antenna I chose!
8. Using Google Chromecast
This device provides access to free premium channels such as Netflix, Hulu, among others. You can also install the device to your TV provided you have the required hardware, and your TV has HDMI port.
Test Your TV’s Reception Now – No Antenna Required!
If you have a modern flat-panel TV (the kind that you can hang on a wall), all you need is an antenna to get these channels, and you’ll be getting most of them in high-definition, with better picture quality than you got with cable!
If you don’t have an antenna right now, here is a quick-and-dirty way to test your TV to see if it will work:

How *I* Get Free Cable Television
Again, this isn’t a trick.
I’m not using a black box cable television descrambler.
There’s no hacking or illegal tech either.
All I have is my television which had a built-in HD tuner and a cable connected to the wall jack:
This is the best part!
I’m using nothing at all.
As you can see above, there isn’t a cable box.
And I swear that I didn’t conveniently remove or photoshop an HD antenna or anything just for this article.
So how did I get this to work?
Oh, you’re going to love this:
It’s so simple it’s disgusting.
I scanned for it!
Yes, that’s all I did to get cable television beyond what my Limited Basic plan calls for.
All I had to do was go to my television’s setup, and tell it to scan for available stations.
When it finished after an hour, it had found all of the standard stations which are included with the Limited Basic cable package my HOA dues cover, plus about 32 or so “digital stations”.
The best part was the tv’s built-in tuner also pulled in the in-between HD versions!
After the scanning was done, all I had to do was go through the channels one at a time and when I came across one that was in standard definition, I simply removed it from my available channels.
Now, I know what you are thinking…this must be some sort of fluke, like when you were a kid and set the tv to channel 2 and the cable box to the porn channel and you could see it semi-clearly.
I’ll be honest, I was skeptical too.
So I went to my parents’ house and conducted a little experiment.
You see, they have a completely different cable television provider than I have, and they have newer tv sets.
The results were the same as mine, except better.
On their television, the digital music stations came in with the sound and picture, where I didn’t get anything.
So that told me all I needed to know–this wasn’t something relegated to only my television or my cable television provider.
You can try it for yourself one evening or weekend when you have a little spare time.
Who knows, maybe you will even have better results.
2. Sign Up for a Free Video Streaming Service
You’ve likely heard of streaming services – services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ that allow you to stream your favorite TV shows and movies on demand, any time. Unfortunately, those streaming services charge monthly fees to access their content. But there are also alternatives available online that give you that same capability for free.
With the right video streaming service, you can watch all kinds of TV shows and plenty of movies without spending anything at all. You just need to look for 100 percent free video streaming services.
These services may or may not require an account to start streaming. But they’re all completely free – and completely legal. One great option is Crackle TV. You can watch both TV shows and movies for free any time, as long as you have an internet connection. There’s no catch – you’ll just have to watch a few ads while streaming.
Devices Needed to Stream Cable Online
A lot of new smart TVs let you get free basic cable TV with little effort. They work well with digital HD antennas. Installation is as simple as a few clicks.
You can also access most streaming platforms directly from your TV.
If your TV does not provide access to the necessary apps, it likely has an HDMI port. You simply plug a device in the port to access a plethora of content.
Some of the top devices you can use are:
Devices have no monthly fees, but you will pay a minimal fee for the option you choose. In some cases, you might be able to travel with the device since you can use it on multiple devices.
We’ve used the Amazon devices for several years and love their simplicity.
You can read our guide on the Amazon Fire Stick vs. Roku to learn which performs best out of the top two devices.
If you’re not an Amazon fan, we’ve tested all of the above devices and all perform well.
3. Watch Free TV Online
A lot of channels, including major networks, actually post full episodes of their shows online.
You wouldn’t necessarily think it, but a lot of networks post their programs on their websites, and you can watch them for free!
Often, the content the networks post online will only be available to watch for a limited time, but it’s still free TV!
What If You Get No Cable TV
The great thing about technology is that we do have so many options available to us besides traditional cable television subscriptions.
One of the things that I hear people doing is using an HD tv antenna.
Sure, it sounds old-school, but there is a big benefit to it:
All over-the-air television signals are uncompressed and therefore are true high-definition signals.
That means even if you can’t get free cable television the way I am able to, you may be able to at least get the next best option.
There are a few caveats, however:
- The further you are from a tower, the weaker the signal will be and the fewer channels you will receive
- The makeup of your home will also impede the signal
- Line-of-sight to a tower is important in terms of trees, mountains, hills, other buildings and structures
- Naturally, the weather will also play a part
The FCC even has a DTV Coverage Map showing you which DTV signals you should be able to access and how strong of a signal you should get.
It’s not exact, but can be used as a reasonable guide.
But, if you get lucky and buy an HD tv antenna like one of the ones below, you may be able to keep your entertainment budget lower than if you paid for cable television.
What is the Best App for Free TV?
Pluto is the best overall platform to stream free TV. The app provides access to over 100 networks, from lifestyle to news.
If you like to watch movies for free, Crackle is a good choice, but Pluto is the closest to the cable experience without paying a dime.
4. Consider Sharing a Video Streaming Service Account
If you want easy – and free – access to all of your favorite cable TV content, streaming services are the best option. But they do come with monthly fees.
However, you can get around those fees if you’re able to share someone else’s account. Many streaming services allow for multiple users. You just need the login information.
Ask your friends and family if they’re willing to let you use their streaming subscriptions. If they’re already paying for these services and haven’t maxed out their available users (many allow between two to four), see if you can become one. Then, you can browse all of the titles available on Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, and so many more without paying anything at all.
If you’re worried that sharing a streaming account isn’t legal or fair, don’t worry too much. It’s incredibly common, and companies expect this. Approximately one-fifth of young adults share streaming service logins, and Netflix’s CEO even said that sharing passwords is “par for the course.”
